Facts About The Salt Lakes

The salt lakes and surrounding park are home to a large variety of bird and wildlife species making our apartment in Guardamar a perfect location for a bird watching or nature holiday.
The lakes and the surrounding area all form part of the natural park, with routes for cyclists and walkers.
Salt is still produced by the method of evapouration.
The salt lakes combined produce in excess of half a million tonnes yearly.
They are home to the fabulous Pink Flamingos which can be seen in large numbers in the Summer.
Originally the lakes of La Mata and Torrevieja belonged to the crown and served as royal hunting grounds.
The king granted hunting licenses and concessions to local allies the first of these crown licenses was granted around the mid 13th century.
It is claimed that bathing in the salt lakes at La Mata will help against asthma, rheumatism, heart diseases, skin disorders and other health problems.

The weather at Guardamar on the Spanish Costa Blanca is wonderful Guardamar del Segura benefits from superb weather, Guardamar is very mild which makes it an ideal destination for holiday makers throughout the year.

The town of Guardamar del Segura and surrounding area is sheltered by hills and mountains and along with this the two salt lakes of Laguna de la Mata and the Salinas de San Miguel, which surround it, create a wonderful micro climate.

The micro climate limits rainfall and as a result the region enjoys sunshine for in excess of 320 days per year. In addition to this the picturesque, and often pink lagoons are also home to hundreds of wild pink flamingos.

During the summer months in Guardamar del Segura the temperatures rarely fall below 30°C (86°F). The winters are typically very mild and enjoy average temperatures of 18°C (64°F).
